I have never in my life seen a straight line…” Robert Delaunay

Inspired and consumed by the urban environment, this body of work and its subsequent installation is a result of photographic experimentation and an inspired five-year burst of activity. A personal reflection of the energy extracted from the city at night depicted in a way, which is dynamic and erupting. The cities in question include London, Copenhagen, Delhi, Tokyo ...and Kyoto.

The images, which flirt with pure abstraction, evoke a sense of speed, diversity and vibrancy of the urban landscape, an almost sculptural celebration of the cities architectural achievements.

Gallivanting through the city, the images are captured through long, disjointed exposures and then inverted. The inversion is key to my work as it articulates structures, quirks and details that would otherwise be lost.

The exhibition of this work see’s the continuation of my utilisation of the written word as an extension of my artistic practice. Stories, conversations, song lyrics, scenarios and thoughts are inscribed amongst the imagery in pencil. Temporary, irrational even nonsensical in parts but they vividly illustrate through words my state of mind, interactions and encounters within the backdrop of the city.

Despite being worlds apart, culturally, aesthetically and economically, not to mention geographically, I wanted to show that despite all of these factors, there is an underlying yet intrinsic energy to be found in every city shaped by the people who dwell in them as well as the environment we have created. To illustrate a luminosity, a sense of place, “the city”

In conjunction with Potassium and Outsider, I am fortunate to be able to bring my show to London after the shows residency last year at the South Bank Arts Centre, Bedford. The show will be on throughout July with the addition of some new work never shown before.
